Product Description

The 1.3" OLED Module provides a crisp 128x64 resolution in a very small footprint. It is widely compatible with Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266, and Raspberry Pi. Because it uses the I2C protocol, it only requires two data pins to operate. The SH1106 driver is very similar to the popular SSD1306 but is optimized for this slightly larger 1.3" screen size, providing a larger viewing area than the standard 0.96" OLEDs while maintaining pin compatibility.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Driver Sensitivity: While many libraries for the 0.96" OLED (SSD1306) will "work," the SH1106 driver in this 1.3" screen starts its memory at a different column offset. If you see a "shifted" image or a line of static on the side, ensure you are using the U8g2 library or a dedicated SH1106 library to fix the alignment.

  • The "Black is Off" Advantage: Since black pixels are actually "off," you can save massive amounts of power by using a dark UI theme. Only lighting up 10% of the pixels (like just text) uses a fraction of the power of a full-screen image.

  • Screen Burn-in: Like all OLEDs, displaying the same static image for hundreds of hours can cause "ghosting." For long-term projects, implement a "screen saver" or a timeout function that turns the display off when not in use.

  • I2C Pull-ups: If you have multiple devices on the same I2C bus and the screen becomes glitchy, check if you need external 4.7kΩ pull-up resistors on the SDA and SCL lines, though most modules include them onboard.
