Product Description

The KY-010 Module is designed for high-speed switching and reliability. Unlike mechanical switches, it has no moving parts, meaning it doesn't suffer from "contact bounce" or physical wear over time. The module features a standard 3-pin interface and is compatible with all major microcontrollers. When the gap is clear, the phototransistor receives the IR light and stays in one logic state; when blocked, it flips to the opposite state. This simple binary output is ideal for interrupt-driven code in robotics.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Tachometer Setup: To measure motor speed, mount a slotted encoder disk on the motor shaft. As the disk spins, the "teeth" will block the light beam, creating a series of pulses. By counting these pulses over time in your code, you can calculate the exact RPM.

  • Pull-up Resistor: While most KY-010 modules have a built-in resistor, some versions require you to enable the internal pull-up resistor on your microcontroller pin (pinMode(pin, INPUT_PULLUP)) for a stable signal.

  • Ambient Light Interference: Although the IR detector is tuned to a specific wavelength, very bright direct sunlight can occasionally "leak" into the sensor and cause false triggers. For outdoor robots, add a small 3D-printed shroud or piece of black tape to shade the sensor slot.

  • The "Clearance" Rule: Ensure your encoder disk or moving part is centered in the 5mm slot. If the part rubs against the plastic housing of the sensor, it will create friction and eventually damage both the disk and the sensor.
