Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Charging Guidance: To ensure maximum battery health, avoid using unregulated high-voltage adapters. A constant current charge of 150mA is recommended until the voltage reaches 4.5V–4.6V. For automated charging, a simple LM317-based voltage regulator circuit set to 4.6V works effectively.

  • Driving 3.3V Electronics: A 4V SLA battery is an excellent power source for 3.3V microcontrollers (like the ESP8266 or Raspberry Pi Pico). Use a Low-Dropout (LDO) regulator like the AMS1117-3.3 to convert the 4V (which can be up to 4.7V when full) into a rock-steady 3.3V.

  • LED Efficiency: This battery is perfect for driving arrays of 0.5W LEDs. Since the battery voltage is close to the LED forward voltage, very little energy is wasted as heat through the current-limiting resistors, allowing for longer runtimes.
