Product Description

The 0.56" 3-Digit Display is designed for multiplexed operation, sharing 8 segment pins (A-G and Decimal Point) across all three digits. This reduces the connection requirement to just 11 or 12 active pins, making it much easier to interface with microcontrollers like Arduino. The segments are housed in a robust package with a black face and white segments to maximize contrast when the red LEDs are illuminated.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Resistor Requirement: Never connect this display directly to a power source. You must use current-limiting resistors (typically 220Ω to 470Ω) on each of the 8 segment lines to protect the LEDs from burning out.

  • Common Cathode Logic: To turn on a segment, connect the Common Pin to Ground and pull the desired Segment Pin (A-G) High (3.3V or 5V).

  • Multiplexing Speed: To display different numbers on each digit simultaneously, your code must cycle through the digits very quickly (at least 60Hz). This uses "persistence of vision" to make all digits appear "on" at the same time.

  • Driving High Loads: If you are using a 5V system, an Arduino can typically drive these segments directly. However, for maximum brightness across all digits, using a driver IC like the MAX7219 is recommended to handle the current more effectively.
