Product Description

The P55NF06 MOSFET is engineered for high-speed switching and low power loss. Its ultra-low Rds(on) ensures that very little energy is wasted as heat during operation, which is vital when managing heavy loads like brushed DC motors or high-power LED arrays. The N-channel logic means it is best used as a low-side switch, where the gate is triggered by a positive voltage to complete the circuit to ground. The TO-220 metal tab is internally connected to the Drain, providing a direct thermal path to an external heat sink for demanding power-delivery tasks.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Gate Driving Logic: Although the gate threshold is between 2V and 4V, a standard 5V Arduino signal might not "fully" turn on the MOSFET for high-current loads. To reach the lowest resistance and prevent the chip from getting hot, try to use a 10V to 12V gate signal or a dedicated MOSFET driver IC.

  • Heat Dissipation: While rated for 50A, the small TO-220 package cannot dissipate the resulting heat without help. If your project draws more than 5A–10A continuously, you must bolt the MOSFET to an aluminum heat sink using thermal paste.

  • The Pull-Down Resistor: Always place a 10k Ohm resistor between the Gate and Ground pins. Without this, the MOSFET gate can pick up static electricity from the air and "latch" into the ON state, potentially running your motor uncontrollably even after you turn off your controller.

  • Inductive Load Safety: When driving motors or solenoids, the internal body diode provides some protection, but for high-power setups, it is best practice to add an external Schottky diode in parallel with the load to safely snub high-voltage "flyback" spikes.
