Product Description

The Smart Dustbin Kit provides a "Touchless" experience, enhancing hygiene by eliminating the need to handle a bin lid. The heart of the system is the Arduino Uno, which continuously monitors the distance measured by the HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Sensor. When an object is detected within a 10cm–20cm range, the Arduino signals the SG90 Micro Servo to rotate, lifting the bin lid via a mechanical linkage. The kit includes high-quality jumper wires for solderless connections and a 9V battery snap for portable operation.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • The "Lid-Wait" Logic: In your code, after the servo opens the lid, add a delay(3000); (3 seconds) before closing it. This ensures the user has enough time to drop the trash without the lid snapping shut too early.

  • Power Source Stability: Servos can draw high current spikes when they start moving. If your Arduino resets when the lid opens, try powering the servo directly from a separate battery pack or add a $100\mu F$ capacitor across the 5V and GND rails to smooth out the power.

  • Mechanical Linkage: Use a thin, stiff wire (like a paperclip) to connect the servo arm to the bin lid. Ensure the pivot point of the lid is smooth; if there is too much friction, the tiny SG90 motor may struggle or overheat.

  • Sensor Placement: Mount the HC-SR04 "eyes" facing slightly upward or directly forward. Avoid mounting them too low where they might detect the floor and stay open permanently.
