Product Description

The MQ-9 Sensor Module is built on a high-quality dual-panel design featuring a power indicator and a TTL signal output LED. The Analog Output (AO) provides a voltage proportional to the gas concentration (higher concentration = higher voltage), while the Digital Output (DO) provides a simple High/Low signal based on a threshold set via the onboard potentiometer. This module is designed for easy mounting with four pre-drilled screw holes and is fully compatible with Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi for rapid prototyping of gas leakage notification systems.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Mandatory Preheating: The MQ-9 requires a "burn-in" period. For the first use, leave the sensor powered on for 24–48 hours to stabilize the chemical layer. For daily use, allow 2–5 minutes of preheating before trusting the readings; otherwise, the initial values will be wildly inaccurate.

  • The Heater Cycle Logic: To get the best results for CO, your code should cycle the heater voltage. If you keep the heater at a constant 5V, the sensor will be very sensitive to methane but less accurate for carbon monoxide.

  • Avoid Contaminants: Never expose the sensor to silicon vapors (found in some glues and hairsprays) or high concentrations of corrosive gases (like Chlorine or HCl). These can "poison" the SnO2 layer, permanently reducing sensitivity or killing the sensor entirely.

  • Calibration: Since every MQ-9 has slightly different base resistance ($R_0$), you must calibrate it in "clean air." Use the analog output to find your baseline value and factor this into your code to calculate the true Parts Per Million (PPM).
