At only 5mm wide, it is significantly thinner than standard 8mm or 10mm strips, making it the ideal choice for narrow channels, edge-lit acrylic projects, signage, and tight spaces in robotic chassis or automotive interiors.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Slim Profile Advantage: This 5mm strip is specifically selected for "Edge-Lit" acrylic signs. Because it is so thin, it can be hidden inside a small slot at the base of a 6mm acrylic sheet to make etched logos glow brilliantly.

  • Powering the Roll: If you are using a full 5-meter roll, ensure your 12V power supply can provide at least 5 Amps. For shorter lengths, calculate approximately 1 Amp per meter to be safe.

  • Heat Management: While LEDs are efficient, high-density strips can get warm. If mounting on plastic or wood for long periods, consider sticking the strip onto a thin aluminum strip to act as a heat sink.

  • Dimming Control: This is a single-color strip (2-wire). You can easily control the brightness using a standard 12V DC dimmer or an Arduino via a logic-level MOSFET (like the IRFZ44N) and PWM signals.
