This versatile module operates across a wide voltage spectrum (3V to 35V), making it compatible with everything from a single Lithium cell to a 24V industrial power supply. By utilizing Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), the controller adjusts the average power delivered to the load without significantly reducing torque, ensuring smooth operation even at low speeds. The integrated potentiometer features a built-in "Off" switch, providing a convenient all-in-one power and speed interface for DIY hobbyist projects and portable electronic devices.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • The "Continuous Load" Rule: While the module is rated for 5A, this is often a peak rating. For long-term industrial or 24/7 use, we recommend keeping the continuous current draw below 3A to prevent thermal stress on the MOSFET.

  • Input vs. Output Voltage: This regulator is a "dimmer" style PWM controller. It does not boost voltage. If you input 12V, your maximum output to the motor will be 12V.

  • Protect Your Controller: When using this with high-torque inductive motors, consider adding a 1N5408 diode in parallel with the motor (in reverse bias) to act as a "freewheeling" diode. This protects the onboard MOSFET from high-voltage spikes during sudden stops.

  • Wiring Polarity: CRITICAL: DC controllers are sensitive to input polarity. Swapping the "Power +" and "Power -" wires can instantly damage the internal PWM IC. Always double-check your connections before clicking the knob "On."

  • LED Dimming: This module works excellently as a high-power LED dimmer. Because it operates at 10kHz, the dimming will appear flicker-free to the human eye and most standard cameras.
