Product Description

The ISD1820 Module provides a simple "true-to-life" voice capture experience. It consists of a driver PCB with three primary control buttons: REC (Record), PLAYE (Edge-triggered Play), and PLAYL (Level-triggered Play). The module utilizes a CMOS-based recording chip that requires no external programming or complex software libraries to function. Simply supply 5V, press the record button, and speak into the onboard high-sensitivity microphone. It also features a "Pass-Through" mode, where the microphone signal is amplified and sent directly to the speaker in real-time.

  • The Quality vs. Time Trade-off: The default 100kΩ resistor (ROSC) gives you 10 seconds of recording at an 8kHz sample rate. If you need a longer message (up to 20 seconds), you can replace it with a 200kΩ resistor, but the audio will sound noticeably "muffled" due to the lower 3.2kHz sample rate.

  • Microcontroller Control: To trigger this with an Arduino, connect the PLAYE pin to a digital output. Set the pin to HIGH for a brief moment to start the playback. Ensure your Arduino and the ISD1820 share a Common Ground.

  • Reducing Noise: If your recording has a "hissing" background noise, ensure your power supply is clean. For best results, use a 100µF decoupling capacitor across the module's VCC and GND pins to filter out electrical interference from other components.

  • Loop Playback: You can create a continuous loop by connecting the "Done" signal (available on some versions) back to the PLAYE pin, or simply use your code to trigger the PLAYE pin at regular intervals.

Disclaimer

Do not use a speaker with an impedance lower than 8Ω, as this may draw excessive current and damage the ISD1820 chip. The onboard microphone is sensitive; avoid recording in high-wind or high-vibration environments for better clarity.
