Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • BMS Requirement: Because this holder connects four cells in series (4S), you must use a 4S BMS (Battery Management System). This protects individual cells from over-charging and over-discharging, ensuring the safety of your high-voltage pack.

  • Motor Driver Pairing: This holder provides a nominal 14.8V, which is the "sweet spot" for many high-torque DC geared motors. Ensure your motor driver (like the L298N or IBT-2) can handle up to 18V to account for the full-charge peak.

  • Voltage Regulation for Logic: 14.8V is too high for the VIN pin of most microcontrollers. Use a Step-Down (Buck) Converter to drop the voltage to a stable 5V for your Arduino or ESP32 logic while using the main rail for your actuators.

  • Mechanical Security: Use M3 screws to fix the holder firmly to your robot's base. For combat robots or high-speed rovers, we recommend adding a Velcro strap over the cells to prevent them from ejecting during sudden impacts.
