Product Description The 5mm 2-Pin RGB Auto-Flashing LED is a smart, integrated light source that brings dynamic color effects to your projects without the need for complex programming. Unlike standard 4-pin RGB LEDs that require a microcontroller to change colors, this LED has a built-in integrated circuit (IC) that automatically cycles through a rainbow of colors as soon as power is applied. With a water-clear lens, it produces sharp, vibrant colors that transition from a smooth slow fade to a high-energy rapid flash. It is the easiest way to add decorative lighting, "party modes," or eye-catching status signals to any robot or electronic prototype.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • The "Zero-Code" Solution: This is the ultimate "shortcut" for adding color. If you want your robot to have flashing multi-color eyes but don't want to use up your Arduino’s PWM pins, simply connect these to your 5V rail with a resistor.

  • Voltage Selection: These LEDs operate between 3.0V and 3.4V.

    • When using an Arduino (5V), use a 150Ω to 220Ω resistor.

    • When using a 3.7V Lithium-Ion battery, use a 47Ω resistor to handle the voltage when the battery is fully charged.

  • Power Stability Tip: Because the internal IC "clocks" the color changes, you might see tiny fluctuations in current. For a more stable color cycle, ensure your power source is well-decoupled with a small capacitor if you are using many of these in parallel.

  • Parallel Wiring: You can wire multiple auto-flashing LEDs in parallel (each with its own resistor). Since each LED has its own internal clock, they will eventually drift out of sync, creating a beautiful, randomized "glimmering" light effect.
