Product Description The 28BYJ-48 is one of the most widely used stepper motors for electronic prototyping and precision control. Operating at 12V, this motor features an internal 1:64 reduction gear set, allowing it to provide surprisingly high torque for its compact size. Its unipolar, 4-phase design makes it exceptionally easy to control with microcontrollers. It is the perfect choice for applications requiring precise incremental movement, such as automated blinds, internal louvers for AC units, small camera sliders, and rotary sensor platforms.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Driver Selection: While you can use discrete transistors, we highly recommend the ULN2003 Driver Board. It features a plug-and-play connector specifically designed for this motor's 5-wire harness, making it beginner-friendly.

  • Calculating Steps: Due to the 1:64 gear ratio, a full 360° rotation requires approximately 4,096 steps in half-step mode. Keep this in mind when writing your code for precise degree-based movements.

  • Speed Limits: Because of the high gear reduction, this motor is designed for precision, not speed. Trying to run it too fast (over 15-20 RPM) will result in "skipped steps" or a vibrating shaft that doesn't actually turn.

  • Heat Management: Stepper motors draw current even when they are not moving (holding torque). If the motor is staying stationary for long periods, consider using the disableOutputs() function in your code to prevent the motor and driver from getting unnecessarily hot.
