Product Description

The 0.56" 1-Digit Display is a robust solid-state device consisting of 8 individual LEDs (7 for the number segments and 1 for the decimal point). Unlike multi-digit modules, this single-digit version does not require multiplexing, meaning you can drive all segments simultaneously for maximum brightness. It features a black face and white segments, which ensures the red light is sharp and easy to read even in bright environments.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Resistors are Mandatory: You must use a current-limiting resistor (typically 220Ω to 470Ω) for each segment. Connecting the segments directly to 5V will instantly burn out the LEDs.

  • Identify Your Polarity: * Common Anode (CA): Connect the common pin to 5V; pull segment pins Low (GND) to turn them on.

    • Common Cathode (CC): Connect the common pin to GND; pull segment pins High (5V) to turn them on.

  • Using a Decoder: To save pins on your Arduino (using 4 pins instead of 8), pair this display with a 74HC4511 (for CC) or 74LS47 (for CA) BCD-to-7-segment decoder IC.

  • Dimming: If the display is too bright, you can use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) on the common pin to adjust the overall brightness through code.

Disclaimer

Always check the part number on the side of the display to verify if it is Common Anode or Common Cathode before wiring. Swapping the logic will prevent the display from lighting up but usually won't damage it if resistors are used.
