  • Grounding for Distance: While RS485 is a 2-wire differential system, for distances over 100 meters, it is best practice to connect the grounds of the two systems (if possible) or use a shielded twisted-pair cable to prevent common-mode voltage issues.

  • Termination Resistors: For a simple point-to-point link, the built-in resistors are usually sufficient. In a multi-drop network (many devices on one bus), ensure only the two devices at the extreme physical ends of the cable have the 120-ohm termination enabled.

  • Twisted Pair is Essential: To fully utilize the noise rejection of RS485, you must use a twisted pair of wires (like one pair from a CAT5/6 cable). Using flat parallel wires will significantly reduce your maximum reliable distance.
