The 4x4 Matrix Keypad uses a scanning method to identify key presses, reducing the number of microcontroller pins required from 16 down to just 8. When a key is pressed, it shorts one row line to one column line. The "Heavy" design ensures that each keypress is deliberate and registered accurately, preventing the "double-entry" errors common with cheaper alternatives. It comes with a standard 8-pin female header, allowing for quick connection via jumper wires or direct PCB mounting.

  • The Keypad Library: For Arduino, use the standard Keypad.h library. You will need to define the Row Pins and Column Pins in your code and map them to a character array. This library handles the "scanning" logic automatically, giving you a simple getKey() function.

  • Software Debouncing: While this heavy-duty keypad has high-quality switches, mechanical buttons can still "bounce" (trigger multiple times per press). The Keypad.h library includes built-in debouncing, but ensure your code isn't running so fast that it catches the same press twice.

  • Saving Pins with I2C: If 8 pins are too many for your project, use a PCF8574 I2C I/O Expander. This allows you to control the entire 16-key matrix using only 2 pins (SDA and SCL) on your Arduino.
