Product Description

The I2C LCD Adapter is built around the PCF8574 remote 8-bit I/O expander chip. It is designed to be soldered directly onto the back of a standard character LCD. Once installed, it communicates with your microcontroller via the I2C protocol, significantly reducing wiring complexity and potential connection errors. The module includes an onboard potentiometer to fine-tune the display contrast and a jumper that can be removed to turn off the backlight manually, or it can be toggled via code.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Scanning for the Address: If your code isn't working, the most common issue is a wrong I2C address. Run an "I2C Scanner" sketch on your Arduino to find the exact hex address (usually 0x27 or 0x3F) of your specific module.

  • The "Invisible Text" Fix: If the screen lights up but shows no characters, use a small screwdriver to turn the blue potentiometer. Often, the contrast is set to minimum from the factory, making the text invisible until adjusted.

  • Soldering Orientation: When attaching the module to the LCD, ensure the I2C pins face away from the screen. Soldering it "backwards" is a common mistake that can lead to short circuits or blocked viewable areas.

  • Pull-up Resistors: The I2C bus requires pull-up resistors to function. Most of these modules already have 4.7kΩ resistors onboard, so you usually don't need to add external ones when connecting to an Arduino.
