Product Description

The 0.56" 4-Digit Display consists of four individual 7-segment digits and a decimal point for each. It is engineered for multiplexed operation, meaning all four digits share the same segment pins (A-G and DP), but have separate common pins. This design reduces the number of pins required from 32 down to 12 pins, making it much easier to drive with an Arduino or a dedicated driver chip like the MAX7219 or TM1637.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Current Limiting Resistors: Never connect this display directly to 5V. You must use current-limiting resistors (typically 220Ω to 470Ω) on each of the 8 segment pins (A-G and DP) to prevent burning out the LEDs.

  • Multiplexing Logic: To show different numbers on each digit (e.g., "12:34"), your code must switch between the four common pins very quickly (at least 60 times per second). The human eye will perceive this as all four digits being on simultaneously.

  • Common Anode vs. Cathode: * Common Cathode: Connect the common pins to Ground; pull the segment pins High (5V) to turn them on.

    • Common Anode: Connect the common pins to 5V; pull the segment pins Low (GND) to turn them on.

  • Simplifying the Circuit: If you find wiring 12 pins and 8 resistors too complex, use a TM1637 Driver Module. It reduces the wiring to just 2 pins (CLK and DIO) and handles all the multiplexing and current limiting for you.

Disclaimer

Excessive heat during soldering can damage the internal LED bond wires. Limit soldering time to under 3 seconds per pin at 300°C.
