Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • The "Niche" 8V Requirement: CRITICAL: Most development boards are 5V (USB) or 9V-12V (Barrel Jack). If you are using this with an Arduino, the 8V input is actually more efficient than a 12V input because the onboard regulator has to dissipate less heat to reach 5V.

  • Current "Headroom" Advantage: Using a 3A adapter for a device that only draws 1A is perfectly safe. The device will only "take" the current it needs, and the adapter will run much cooler, significantly extending its operational life.

  • Polarity Check: While almost all modern DC barrel jacks are Center Positive, always verify the diagram on your device. Plugging a Center Positive adapter into a Center Negative device can cause immediate, irreversible damage to the motherboard.

  • Motor Applications: If using this to power DC motors, remember that motors create "back EMF" (electrical noise). We recommend adding a 1000µF 16V electrolytic capacitor across the power rails near the motor to smooth out current spikes.

  • Extension Cautions: If you need to extend the DC cable, use high-gauge copper wire (at least 18 AWG). Using thin jumper wires over a long distance will cause a "voltage drop," meaning your 8V adapter might only provide 7V to the device by the time it reaches the end of the wire.
