Product Description

The TP5100 Dual Battery Protection Board is a versatile power management module that adapts to your project's specific battery configuration. By default, the module is set to charge a single 4.2V cell at 2A. However, by simply bridging the "SET" solder pads on the PCB, it transforms into a 2S charger for 8.4V battery packs. The module features an integrated power MOSFET and requires minimal external components. An onboard dual-color LED provides immediate visual status: Red for charging and Blue (or Green) for a full charge or standby mode.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • The 2S Input Requirement: If you configure the module for 2S (8.4V) charging, your input voltage must be at least 10V to 12V to ensure the buck converter has enough "headroom" to reach the full charge voltage. A 5V input will only work for 1S (4.2V) mode.

  • Thermal Dissipation: While more efficient than a TP4056, the module can still get warm at a full 2A load. We recommend mounting the module with a small piece of thermal pad against a metal chassis or ensuring good airflow in your enclosure.

  • Sense Resistor Modification: The 2A current is set by two parallel $0.1\Omega$ resistors. If you need a slower, gentler charge for smaller batteries (e.g., 500mA), you can remove one of these resistors to decrease the output current.

Disclaimer

Always verify your battery polarity before connecting to the B+ and B- terminals. Reversing the battery can damage the protection IC. Ensure the "SET" jumper matches your battery pack voltage before applying power.
