Product Description & Technical Details

Product Description

The ACS712 30A Current Sensor Module is a high-precision solution for measuring both AC and DC current using the Hall Effect principle. This module features a copper conduction path located near the surface of the die. When current flows through this path, it generates a magnetic field which the integrated Hall IC converts into a proportional analog voltage. Unlike shunt-based sensors, the ACS712 provides galvanic isolation, meaning the high-power circuit being measured is electrically insulated from your delicate microcontroller. It is widely used for motor control, load detection, switched-mode power supplies (SMPS), and overcurrent protection.

Key Highlights

  • Dual-Directional Sensing: Capable of measuring current in both directions, making it ideal for battery charging/discharging monitoring or AC waveform analysis.

  • Integrated Electrical Isolation: The terminals for the current path are electrically isolated from the sensor leads, providing safety when measuring high-voltage mains or large battery banks.

  • Low-Noise Analog Signal Path: Designed for high accuracy with an internal filter pin that can be used to set the bandwidth, reducing electrical noise in sensitive environments.

  • Robust Terminal Blocks: Features high-quality screw terminals that can securely hold heavy-gauge wires required to carry up to 30 Amperes.

  • Linear Output: The output voltage is centered at VCC/2 (2.5V when powered by 5V) at 0 Amps, increasing or decreasing linearly as current flows.

Technical Specifications

  • Sensitivity: 66 mV/A

  • Total Output Error: 1.5% (at $T_A = 25°C$)

  • Internal Conductor Resistance: 1.2 mΩ (Ultra-low power loss)

  • Bandwidth: 80 kHz

  • Dimensions: 31mm x 13mm

Installation Tip from Robogears

Since the ACS712 is a Hall Effect sensor, it is sensitive to external magnetic fields. Keep the module away from strong magnets or large transformers to avoid measurement drift. To calculate the current in your Arduino code, use the formula:

$$Current\ (A) = \frac{Voltage_{out} - (VCC / 2)}{Sensitivity}$$

For AC measurement, you will need to sample the output rapidly and calculate the RMS value. Safety Note: Although the module is isolated, always use heat shrink or a proper enclosure when measuring 230V AC to prevent accidental contact with the high-voltage screw terminals.
