Product Description & Technical Details

Product Description The PL2303 USB to TTL Converter is an essential communication bridge for electronics engineers and hobbyists. It allows your computer to communicate with microcontrollers and other serial devices through a standard USB port. This adapter converts USB signals into RS232 TTL logic, which is the native language of microcontrollers like the Arduino Pro Mini, ESP8266, and Raspberry Pi. Encased in a durable heat-shrink tube with a 1-meter cable, it provides a stable and convenient way to upload firmware, debug code via serial monitor, or upgrade the software on various consumer electronics like routers and set-top boxes.

Key Highlights

  • Dual Voltage Output: Features both 3.3V and 5V power pins, allowing you to power and program a wide range of devices without needing an external power supply.

  • Plug-and-Play Compatibility: Works with standard Prolific drivers. It is compatible with Windows (XP/7/8/10/11), Linux, and macOS.

  • Hardware Protection: Includes an onboard self-recovery fuse that protects your computer’s USB port from accidental short circuits on the project side.

  • Status LEDs: Typically includes Power and Data (TX/RX) indicator LEDs to provide real-time visual feedback during data transmission.

  • Integrated Cable: Unlike small breakout boards, this module comes with an integrated cable and pre-crimped female header connectors for immediate use.

Technical Specifications

  • Communication Protocol: UART

  • Pinout: Red (VCC), Black (GND), White (RXD), Green (TXD) — Note: Colors may vary by batch.

  • Operating Current: < 100mA

  • Connector Pitch: 2.54mm (Standard Dupont)

  • Operating Temperature: -40°C to +85°C

Installation Tip from Robogears When connecting this to your microcontroller, remember the "Golden Rule" of serial communication: TX goes to RX, and RX goes to TX. Never connect TX to TX. If you are using Windows 10 or 11, you may need to manually install an older version of the Prolific driver (v3.2.0.0 or similar) if your PC reports a "Code 10" error, as newer drivers often block older PL2303 chips. At Robogears, we recommend checking the device manager as soon as you plug it in to ensure the COM port is assigned correctly.
