• First-Time Preparation: CRITICAL: When you turn the iron on for the very first time, it may emit a small amount of smoke. This is normal and is just the manufacturing oils burning off the element. Proceed to "tin" the tip with solder immediately to prevent oxidation.

• The "Tinning" Habit: Always keep the tip shiny. Before turning off the iron, apply a small amount of solder to the bit. This "tinned" layer prevents the nickel plating from oxidizing and ensures the iron will melt solder easily next time.
