Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Shaft Mounting: The 6mm shaft usually features a threaded internal hole or a flat D-cut. Use an M3 screw or a set-screw coupling to lock your wheel in place, preventing it from slipping during high-speed rotations.

  • Driver Recommendation: To handle the high-speed switching and current spikes, we recommend the L298N or a robust MOSFET-based driver. If you need speed control, ensure your PWM frequency is set correctly to avoid "whining" noises from the gearbox.

  • Lubrication: These metal gearboxes come pre-lubricated. However, for long-term industrial use, adding a small amount of lithium grease every 100 hours of operation will significantly extend the gear life.

  • Inertia Handling: At 1000 RPM, the motor has significant rotational momentum. When stopping the motor, use "Braking" mode on your motor driver rather than just cutting the power to ensure precise stops and prevent mechanical over-travel.
