Product Description

The TA6586 Motor Driver is a "power-on-chip" solution for low-to-medium voltage motor control. Unlike larger drivers like the L298N, the TA6586 uses internal MOSFETs which have a significantly lower voltage drop, meaning more power reaches your motor and less is wasted as heat. The module is designed to interface directly with microcontrollers like Arduino, ESP32, or Raspberry Pi without the need for external level shifters. It supports Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) for speed control and includes an automatic "Brake" function when both control pins are pulled HIGH.

Technical Details

  • Input Logic (IN1, IN2):

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Speed Control via PWM: To control the speed of your motor, apply a PWM signal to one of the input pins while keeping the other pin LOW. For example, applying PWM to IN1 and keeping IN2 at 0V will drive the motor forward at a variable speed.

  • The "Brake" vs. "Coast" Logic: If your robot needs to stop instantly at a specific point, use the Brake mode (Both pins HIGH). If the robot should roll to a stop naturally to save mechanical wear, use the Standby mode (Both pins LOW).

  • Capacitor Recommendation: While the module has internal protection, we recommend soldering a $0.1\mu F$ ceramic capacitor across the terminals of your DC motor. This reduces electrical noise that can interfere with the I2C or Serial communication of your microcontroller.

  • Heat Dissipation: Although MOSFET-based, the module can get warm at its 5A limit. Ensure there is adequate airflow or a small adhesive heatsink if running the motor at high loads for more than a few minutes.
