Prototyping & Engineering Tips (Robogears Exclusive)

  • The "PWM" Rule: At our Pimpri facility, we always remind makers that to get smooth color transitions, you must connect the R, G, and B pins to PWM-enabled pins on your Arduino (marked with a '~' symbol, like 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, or 11).

  • Voltage Drop Check: Different colors have different forward voltages. Red typically drops around 1.8V, while Blue and Green drop around 3.0V. If you find one color is much brighter than the others, adjust your code or resistor values to balance the intensity.

  • Diffuser Trick: SMD LEDs are very bright and "pointy." If you want a soft, glowing effect rather than a harsh dot of light, place a piece of frosted acrylic or a 3D-printed white "cap" over the module.

  • Common Anode vs Cathode: Ensure your code matches the hardware. For this Common Cathode module, setting a pin to HIGH (255) turns the color ON. (Common Anode modules work the opposite way).
