  • Tip Tinning: Always "tin" the tip (apply a thin layer of solder) before you start and before you turn the iron off. This prevents oxidation and ensures the tip lasts for hundreds of uses.

  • Soldering Large Connectors: When soldering thick wires (like 12AWG battery leads), apply a small drop of solder to the tip first to create a "heat bridge." This helps the heat flow into the thick wire much faster.

  • Heat Management: 100W is very powerful. Be careful when using this on delicate 0.1-inch header pins or small ICs, as the high heat can easily lift the copper pads off the PCB. Use it primarily for mechanical connections and large terminals.

  • Maintenance: If the tip becomes black or "crusty," use a Brass Wire Tip Cleaner rather than a wet sponge. A wet sponge causes "thermal shock," which can lead to microscopic cracks in the tip's plating.
