Product Description

The SIM800L V2 is a "plug-and-play" version of the popular SIM800L module. It is mounted on an EVB (Evaluation Board) that provides a Micro USB port for power and debugging. This module supports worldwide GSM networks and includes a high-gain IPX antenna to ensure a stable connection even in low-signal areas. Its compact footprint and built-in protection against high pressure and voltage loss make it ideal for industrial telemetry, remote monitoring, and IoT "smart" devices.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Power is Critical: While the module accepts 5V, GSM modules draw high current bursts (up to 2A) when searching for a network or sending data. A standard computer USB port might not provide enough current, leading to "brown-outs" where the module constantly reboots. Always use a 2A power adapter for stable performance.

  • Antenna Placement: Always connect the antenna before powering on the module. Operating without an antenna can damage the internal power amplifier due to signal reflection. Keep the antenna away from other metal parts to prevent interference.

  • The "VDD" Pin: On the V2 board, the VDD pin is used to match the TTL voltage. If you are using a 5V Arduino, connect VDD to 5V; if using a 3.3V ESP32, connect VDD to 3.3V.

  • Baud Rate Matching: The module defaults to "Auto-Bauding." It is a good practice to send a few "AT" commands at the start of your code to help the module synchronize its speed with your microcontroller.
