Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears
BMS Requirement: Since this is an unprotected cell, always use a Lithium Battery Protection Board (BMS) to prevent overcharging, over-discharging, and short circuits. This is critical for safety and battery longevity.
Charging Safety: Only use chargers specifically designed for Lithium-Ion 3.7V/4.2V chemistry. Never leave batteries charging unattended, and avoid charging near flammable materials.
Soldering vs. Spot Welding: To build a battery pack, spot welding nickel strips is the professional method. If soldering, be extremely fast and use a high-wattage iron to avoid overheating the internal chemistry, which can permanently damage the cell.
Voltage Balancing: If connecting multiple cells in series or parallel, ensure all batteries are at the exact same voltage level before assembly to prevent high current surges between cells.
