Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Charging Safety: Always use a dedicated Li-Po balance charger. Never charge Li-Po batteries with a standard DC power supply, as overcharging can cause the battery to swell or ignite.

  • The "Puff" Test: If you notice the battery casing starting to "puff" or swell, discontinue use immediately. This is a sign of internal chemical degradation or previous over-discharge.

  • Connector Polarity: While the JST plug is polarized, always verify that the Red (Positive) and Black (Negative) wires match the pinout of your device. Some manufacturers may use a reversed polarity on specific flight controllers.

  • Storage Charge: If you don't plan to use the battery for more than a week, discharge or charge it to approximately 3.8V (storage voltage). Storing a Li-Po at full charge (4.2V) or complete discharge (3.0V) for long periods will significantly reduce its lifespan.
