Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • First Charge: For a brand-new NiMH pack, we recommend a slow "formation charge" at 0.1C (500mA) for 12 hours. This ensures all cells in the series are perfectly balanced and reaches their full chemical potential.

  • Storage: Unlike Li-ion, NiMH batteries should be stored with at least a 30-50% charge. Avoid leaving them completely discharged for months, as this can lead to "cell reversal" and permanent capacity loss.

  • Connector Compatibility: If your project uses XT60 or Deans connectors, you will need a Tamiya-to-XT60 adapter. Ensure the polarity (Red is Positive, Black is Negative) is verified before connection, as Tamiya housings can occasionally vary by manufacturer.

  • Heat Management: During fast charging or heavy usage, the pack will get warm. This is normal for NiMH; however, if it becomes too hot to touch, stop the process immediately to prevent internal venting.
