Product Description

The PL2303HX adapter is a plug-and-play solution that creates a virtual COM port on your computer. It features a transparent blue casing that allows you to see the onboard power and data LEDs, which flash during active transmission. The output side typically uses a terminal block for secure wiring, making it easy to connect twisted-pair cables for industrial networking.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Driver Installation: The PL2303HX is an older chipset. If you are using Windows 10 or 11, you may need to manually install an older driver version (v3.2.0.0) from the manufacturer's website to avoid the "Code 10" error in Device Manager.

  • Termination Resistor: For long cable runs (over 100 meters) or high baud rates, add a 120-ohm resistor between the A+ and B- terminals at both ends of the bus. This prevents signal reflections that can corrupt your data.

  • Grounding: While RS485 is a 2-wire differential system, connecting a common GND wire between the adapter and the remote device can help prevent ground loop interference in electrically "noisy" industrial environments.

  • Polarity Check: If your software cannot see the remote device, try swapping the A+ and B- wires. Different manufacturers sometimes label these pins differently (D+/D- or Non-inverting/Inverting).
