Prototyping & Engineering Tips (Robogears Exclusive)

  • The "12V Jumper" Rule: If your motor power supply (VMS) is above 12V, you must remove the onboard 5V regulator jumper to avoid damaging the 78M05 chip. In this case, you will need to provide a separate 5V logic supply to the +5V terminal.

  • Common Grounding: Always ensure the GND of your battery and the GND of your Arduino are connected together at your Pimpri workshop. Without a common ground, the control signals will not work, and the motors won't turn.

  • Voltage Drop: Be aware that the L298N is a Bipolar-junction transistor (BJT) based driver, which results in an internal voltage drop of about 1.5V to 2V. If you supply 12V, your motors will receive approximately 10V.

  • Current Limits: While rated for 2A peak, for continuous operation in mobile robots, we recommend keeping the load below 1.2A per channel to prevent excessive heat buildup, even with the heatsink.
