Prototyping & Engineering Tips (Robogears Exclusive)

  • Distance is Key: At our Pimpri workshop, we’ve found that the most accurate readings for human skin are taken at a distance of 2cm to 5cm. While the DCI version can sense from further away, the "spot size" grows with distance, potentially averaging the background temperature into your reading.

  • The "Emissivity" Factor: Most organic materials (and human skin) have an emissivity of ~0.95. If you are measuring polished metals, you may need to adjust the emissivity constant in your code to avoid inaccurate low readings.

  • Thermal Equilibrium: If you move the sensor from a cold office to a hot warehouse, allow the module 10–15 minutes to reach thermal equilibrium with the environment before trusting its readings.

  • I2C Pull-ups: This module usually comes with on-board pull-up resistors. If you are using long wires or multiple I2C devices, ensure your pull-up resistance is around 4.7kΩ to maintain signal integrity at high speeds.
