Product Description

The Dual-Channel TCRT5000 Module is an essential upgrade for line-following robots, providing twice the data points of a single sensor. The module works on the principle of IR reflection; the emitter sends out an infrared beam, and if it hits a light surface, the beam bounces back to the receiver. If it hits a black line, the IR light is absorbed, and the receiver detects nothing. This signal is processed by the onboard LM393 comparator, which provides a clean digital output for each channel. The module features two independent potentiometers to fine-tune the sensitivity of each sensor head, ensuring reliable performance even under varying ambient light.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Optimal Height is Key: The TCRT5000 is most effective when mounted 5mm to 10mm above the ground. If it is too high, ambient light will cause false triggers; if it is too low, the sensor may not distinguish between the line and the floor effectively.

  • Ambient Light Shielding: While the module has a daylight filter, bright sunlight can still interfere with the IR readings. If testing outdoors or under bright LED studio lights, consider adding a small "skirt" or shroud around the sensors to block external IR noise.

  • Calibration Hack: To calibrate, place one sensor over the black line and the other over the white surface. Adjust the potentiometers until the "Signal LED" toggles only when the sensor is over the white area. Repeat for the second channel.

  • Logic Inversion: Remember that the output is typically LOW when a reflection is detected (white surface) and HIGH when no reflection is detected (black line). Always verify this in your code before writing your motor control logic.

Disclaimer

Avoid using this sensor on highly reflective metallic surfaces (like chrome or mirrors), as they will always return a "white" signal regardless of markings. Ensure the IR LEDs are kept clean; dust buildup on the blue/black sensor heads can significantly reduce the detection range.
