This version is a Common Cathode (CC) configuration, meaning all three internal LEDs share a single negative ground pin. By providing power to the individual color pins and varying the voltage (using PWM), you can create thousands of colors, from vibrant purples and cyans to a crisp white. Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Resistor Selection is Critical: Because each color has a different forward voltage, you must use different resistor values for each pin to ensure uniform brightness and prevent burnout.

    • For 5V (Arduino): Use a 150Ω to 220Ω resistor for Green and Blue, and a 220Ω to 330Ω resistor for Red.

  • PWM Color Mixing: To create colors like orange or pink, connect the three anode pins to PWM-enabled pins on your Arduino (like D3, D5, and D6). Use the analogWrite() command to blend the intensities.

  • The Longest Pin: Always identify the longest pin first—that is your Ground (Cathode). The other three pins are for the colors.

  • Diffuser Tip: Because the lens is clear, you might see individual red, green, and blue spots if you look closely. If you want a perfectly blended "single" color, place a small piece of translucent white tape over the LED or use it with a 3D-printed diffuser.
