Prototyping & Engineering Tips (Robogears Exclusive)

  • Power Supply Requirement: At our Pimpri workshop, we’ve found that the SIM900A requires at least 1A to 2A of current during network registration. Powering the module solely from an Arduino's 5V pin will likely cause it to reboot. Always use an external 5V 2A power adapter.

  • SIM Card Selection: Ensure you are using a 2G-compatible SIM card (typically Airtel, Vi, or BSNL in India). Note that Jio is a 4G-only network and will not work with this 2G GSM module.

  • Baud Rate Sync: The default baud rate is often set to "Auto-Baud." For the most stable results with Arduino, we suggest forcing a fixed baud rate like 9600 or 19200 using AT commands.

  • Network Status: Watch the "Net" LED. A fast blink (once per second) means it is searching for a network; a slow blink (once every 3 seconds) means it has successfully registered.
