Product Description

The Metal Detector Module is a "plug-and-play" solution for identifying ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It features an onboard potentiometer that allows users to fine-tune the sensitivity and detection threshold, ensuring it can ignore small metallic interference while focusing on target objects. The module is compact and breadboard-compatible, featuring a standard 3-pin header (VCC, GND, OUT) that connects directly to an Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or any microcontroller without the need for external voltage dividers or complex circuitry.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Material Sensitivity: Not all metals are detected equally. Iron (Ferrous) provides the maximum detection distance, while Aluminum and Copper (Non-Ferrous) may require the object to be significantly closer to the sensor coil.

  • The Potentiometer "Sweet Spot": To calibrate, place your target metal at the desired distance and turn the potentiometer until the LED just turns on. Then, remove the metal and ensure the LED turns off. Avoid setting it to maximum sensitivity, as ambient electromagnetic noise can cause "ghost" triggers.

  • Isolation from Motors: If using this on a robot, mount the sensor away from large DC motors. The magnetic fields generated by the motor coils can interfere with the sensor's inductive field, leading to erratic readings.

  • Mounting Orientation: For the best results, the metal object should approach the flat face of the inductive coil (usually the side opposite the components). Metal approaching from the sides may not be detected as reliably.
