Product Description

The APM 2.8 is a complete open-source autopilot system. It features a powerful ATmega2560 CPU and allows for fully autonomous flight, including missions with programmed waypoints via the Mission Planner software. The board includes a dedicated I2C port for external sensors and high-speed Dataflash for storing flight logs, which is essential for post-flight analysis and tuning.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Compass Jumper Setting: If you are using an external GPS with a built-in compass, you must remove the "MAG" jumper on the APM 2.8 board. Leaving it on will cause a conflict between the internal and external compasses, leading to "bad compass health" errors.

  • Powering Safely: It is highly recommended to power the APM 2.8 using a Power Module. This provides a clean, regulated 5.3V supply and allows the board to monitor your battery's voltage and current consumption in real-time.

  • Vibration Isolation: Like all flight controllers with a barometer and accelerometer, the APM 2.8 is sensitive to vibration. Use a Flight Controller Anti-Vibration Set to prevent "altitude hold" issues.

  • Firmware Note: The APM 2.8 uses an 8-bit processor. While it is extremely capable, it is at the "end of life" for new ArduPilot features. For the best experience, use ArduCopter version 3.2.1, which is the most stable and feature-complete version for this specific hardware.
