Product Description

This compact module uses a specialized MOSFET-based circuit to shift logic levels. When a signal is sent from the low-voltage side, the MOSFET allows the high-voltage side to "see" that signal safely, and vice-versa. It features standard 0.1" pitch headers, making it perfectly compatible with breadboards and standard jumper wires.

Technical Details

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Common Ground is Mandatory: For the shifter to work, you must connect the ground (GND) from your 5V controller and the ground from your 3.3V sensor to the GND pins on this module. Without a common ground, the logic levels will be "floating" and communication will fail.

  • I2C Pull-ups: This specific MOSFET design often includes internal 10kΩ pull-up resistors. If you are using this for I2C and already have pull-ups on your sensors, the combined resistance might be too low for very long wires.

  • Speed Limits: While excellent for I2C (up to 400kHz) and standard UART, MOSFET-based shifters can struggle with extremely high-speed SPI (above 2MHz) due to the "rise time" of the signal. If your high-speed display is flickering, consider a dedicated high-speed IC like the 74HCT125.

  • Directional Labels: Always double-check your wiring: HV goes to the 5V side and LV goes to the 3.3V side. Swapping these won't necessarily blow the chip instantly, but it will prevent the level shifting from working.
