This kit is designed for passive cooling, meaning it works silently without the need for fans or external power. Each heat sink features multiple fins to increase the surface area exposed to the air, significantly improving heat dissipation. The pre-applied thermal adhesive makes installation effortless—simply peel and stick them onto the designated chips on your Raspberry Pi board.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Cleaning Before Applying: Before sticking the heat sinks on, use a small amount of Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) and a lint-free cloth to clean the top of the Pi's chips. Any oils from your fingers can reduce the effectiveness of the thermal tape.

  • Placement Accuracy: Once the thermal tape touches the chip, it sticks very firmly. Align the heat sink carefully before pressing down; trying to remove and re-stick it can damage the tape's conductive properties.

  • Passive vs. Active Cooling: While these heat sinks are excellent for standard use, if you are overclocking your Pi or keeping it inside a very small, airtight case, you may still need a small 5V fan to move air over these fins.

  • Short-Circuit Prevention: Ensure the heat sinks only touch the top of the black chips. If a heat sink is tilted and touches nearby metal pins or capacitors, it could cause a short circuit.
