Product Description & Technical Details

Product Description The TTP223B Capacitive Touch Sensor is a modern, solid-state alternative to traditional mechanical push-buttons. It operates by detecting the change in capacitance when a human finger approaches the sensing area. Because it works through non-conductive materials like glass, plastic, or wood, it is ideal for creating sleek, waterproof, or vandal-proof user interfaces. The module is highly reliable and consumes very little power, making it a favorite for the Robogears team when building smart mirrors, hidden furniture switches, or interactive LED installations.

Key Highlights

  • Contactless Triggering: Can be mounted behind a panel up to 3mm thick (depending on material), allowing for completely hidden "magic" switches.

  • Auto-Calibration: The sensor automatically recalibrates to its environment upon power-up, ensuring stable performance even as temperature or humidity changes.

  • Low Power Consumption: In low-power mode, the current draw is typically in the microamp range, making it suitable for battery-operated devices.

  • Momentary Action: By default, the output remains HIGH as long as a finger is detected and returns to LOW when released (this can be customized on some versions via solder pads).

  • Wide Compatibility: Its wide operating voltage (2V–5.5V) means it can be powered directly by an Arduino (5V) or an ESP32/Raspberry Pi (3.3V).

Technical Specifications

  • Output Drive: High-level output can source ~8mA (Max)

  • Status LED: Onboard red LED lights up immediately when the sensor is triggered.

  • Interface: 3-Pin header (GND, VCC, SIG)

  • Operating Temperature: -20°C to +70°C

  • Sensitivity: Fixed (Optimized for human touch)

Installation Tip from Robogears Since this is a capacitive sensor, it is sensitive to electromagnetic interference. Avoid routing high-voltage AC wires or noisy motor cables directly behind the touch pad. If you are mounting it behind a plastic or glass panel, use a thin piece of non-conductive double-sided adhesive tape to ensure there is no air gap between the sensor and the surface; air gaps significantly reduce touch sensitivity. In your code, use a simple digitalRead(SIG) to detect the touch state.
