Product Description

The 0.56" 1-Digit Display consists of eight individual LEDs: seven for the numerical segments (labeled A through G) and one for the decimal point (DP). In a Common Anode setup, the common pin is connected to the positive supply (VCC), and individual segments are illuminated by connecting their respective pins to ground (GND) through a resistor. This module features a black face with white segments when off, providing high contrast and excellent visibility when the red LEDs are active.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • Current Limiting is Crucial: Never connect the segment pins directly to ground. You must use a current-limiting resistor (typically 220Ω to 470Ω) for each of the 8 segment lines to prevent the LEDs from burning out.

  • Common Anode Logic: To light up a segment, connect the Common Pin to your 5V or 3.3V supply and pull the desired Segment Pin Low (0V).

  • Saved Pin Counts: If you are short on microcontroller pins, use a 74HC595 Shift Register or a MAX7219 driver. These allow you to control multiple 7-segment displays using only 3 data pins.

  • Testing with a Multimeter: If you aren't sure of the pinout, use a multimeter in Diode Test mode. Place the red probe on the common pin and the black probe on the other pins to identify which segment corresponds to which pin.
