By integrating a PCF8574 I2C adapter on the back, the display reduces the required connection pins from 16 down to just 4 (VCC, GND, SDA, and SCL). Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • 9V Battery Use: The LCD requires a stable 5V. Do not connect a 9V battery directly to the VCC pin. Use the 5V output pin of your Arduino. If the screen is blank, adjust the blue potentiometer on the back to fix the contrast.

  • 18650 Cell: A single 18650 cell (3.7V) might be too low to power the backlight effectively. Use two 18650s in series (7.4V) with a 7805 voltage regulator or a Buck Converter to provide the 5V needed for a bright display.

  • IC & Capacitor Tip: I2C communication is sensitive to noise. If you see "garbage" characters on the screen, add a 0.1uF Ceramic Capacitor between VCC and GND close to the display. Always ensure your I2C address is correct—most modules use 0x27 or 0x3F.
