Prototyping & Engineering Tips (Robogears Exclusive)

  • Configuration is Critical: For the mecanum drive to work, the wheels must be installed in a specific pattern. When viewed from above, the diagonal rollers should form an "X" shape. If your robot moves forward but fails to strafe sideways, double-check your wheel placement.

  • Motor Control: To achieve lateral movement, you must use four independent motors. Strafing is achieved by rotating the diagonal pairs of motors in opposite directions.

  • Surface Selection: Mecanum wheels perform best on hard, flat surfaces. They are not recommended for thick carpets or loose gravel, as the rollers need a firm surface to generate the necessary vector forces.

  • Coupling Security: Since mecanum movement involves frequent direction changes, ensure your motor couplings are tightened with thread-locker (Loctite) on the grub screws to prevent them from loosening during high-agility manoeuvres at your Pimpri facility.
