The Tiny RTC DS1307 is more than just a clock; it is a multi-functional peripheral for embedded systems. It utilizes the DS1307 IC, which accounts for leap years up to the year 2100. The module includes a dedicated 32.768kHz crystal oscillator for precise timing and a battery holder on the underside to ensure the clock never resets during power failures. Additionally, it features the AT24C32 EEPROM chip, providing 4KB of non-volatile storage to save system settings or log event timestamps. Its standard 0.1" pitch headers make it easy to mount on breadboards or integrate into custom PCBs.

  • Battery Considerations: The module is designed for the LIR2032 (rechargeable) battery. If you use a standard CR2032 (non-rechargeable), it is recommended to disable the onboard charging circuit (by removing a specific resistor/diode) to prevent the battery from leaking or swelling over time.

  • The "First Run" Code: When you first power the module, the DS1307 oscillator is often disabled by default. You must run a "Set Time" sketch in your Arduino IDE once to initialize the clock and start the oscillator; otherwise, the time will remain static at "00:00:00".
