This eliminates the need for a secondary processor and allows the Leonardo to appear to a connected computer as a mouse or keyboard, in addition to a virtual (CDC) serial/COM port. At Robogears, we recommend the Leonardo R3 for projects requiring Human Interface Device (HID) emulation, such as custom gaming controllers or automation macros. The board uses a convenient Micro USB connector and maintains the standard Arduino R3 pinout, ensuring compatibility with most existing shields and accessories.

Prototyping & Engineering Tips (Robogears Exclusive)

  • Serial vs. Serial1: On the Leonardo, Serial refers to the USB (Virtual) communication to your computer, while Serial1 refers to the hardware UART on Pins 0 (RX) and 1 (TX). This is a common point of confusion—if you're using a Bluetooth module at your Pimpri facility, use Serial1 in your code!

  • Keyboard Emulation Safety: When programming HID macros, always include a "fail-safe" switch in your code. If your script starts typing indefinitely, you might lose control of your computer; a physical switch to disable the HID output is a professional-grade safety measure.

  • Bootloader Behavior: When you press the reset button or upload code, the Leonardo disappears and reappears as a different USB device. If your computer doesn't recognize it initially, check your Device Manager to see the port change.

  • Voltage Regulation: If powering via the DC Barrel Jack, stay within the 7V–12V range. Using a 9V battery or a 12V adapter is perfect, but going higher can cause the onboard 5V regulator to overheat.
