At Robogears, we recommend this shield for its incredible versatility: it can control up to 4 DC motors or 2 stepper motors, while simultaneously providing two dedicated 5V servo ports. It features two L293D motor driver ICs and a 74HC595 shift register, which allows you to control all motor functions using only 4 digital pins of your Arduino. With built-in pull-down resistors to keep motors disabled during power-up and a dedicated external power terminal, this shield is the ideal choice for multi-motor robot platforms and CNC prototypes.

  • Multi-Motor Support: Capable of driving 4 DC motors with 8-bit speed selection or 2 stepper motors (unipolar or bipolar) with single coil, double coil, or interleaved stepping.

If your motors require a higher voltage (above 9V) or draw heavy current, remove the jumper and provide separate power to the shield's terminal and the Arduino's DC jack.

  • Current Limitation: The L293D is rated for 600mA continuous. If your motors stall or draw more than 1A, the chips will get hot. For high-torque applications, you can "piggyback" a second L293D chip on top of the existing ones to double the current capacity.

  • Library Tip: Use the Adafruit Motor Shield library (Version 1) for the best software support. It provides simple commands like motor.setSpeed() and motor.run(FORWARD) to get you moving in minutes.

  • Servo Wiring: The two servo headers are powered directly from the Arduino's 5V regulator. If you are using large high-torque servos (like the MG995), they may cause the Arduino to reset; in such cases, power the servos from an external 5V BEC.
