Product Description & Technical Details
Product Description
The AMS1117-5.0V Power Supply Module is a high-performance Low Dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulator designed to provide a steady 5V output from higher voltage DC sources. This module is an essential tool for powering microcontrollers like the Arduino Uno, Mega, or various 5V sensors from a 9V battery or 12V power adapter. Unlike raw regulator chips, this module comes pre-assembled on a PCB with integrated input and output filtering capacitors to ensure a clean, ripple-free voltage supply. Its tiny size and straightforward 2-pin input/output design make it a favorite at Robogears for rapid prototyping and battery-powered applications.
Key Highlights
Precise 5V Regulation: Converts unstable or higher voltage inputs (up to 12V) into a rock-solid 5V output, protecting your digital logic circuits.
Plug-and-Play Design: Features standard male headers that plug directly into breadboards or connect via female jumper wires, eliminating the need for complex external circuitry.
Low Dropout Voltage: The AMS1117-5.0 requires very little "headroom" (typically 1.1V to 1.3V) between the input and output to maintain regulation.
Built-in Power Indicator: Includes an onboard Red LED that provides immediate visual confirmation that the module is receiving power and functioning correctly.
Enhanced Stability: Pre-equipped with SMD capacitors to handle transient load changes and reduce high-frequency noise in sensitive sensor circuits.

Installation Tip from Robogears
Since the AMS1117 is a linear regulator, it converts excess voltage into heat. While it is rated for 800mA, the actual usable current depends on the input voltage. If you supply 12V to get 5V, the chip has to "drop" 7V; at high currents, this will cause it to get very hot. For continuous high-current loads, we recommend keeping the input voltage around 6.5V to 7.5V or adding a small heatsink to the tab of the IC. Always ensure you do not reverse the polarity on the input pins, as this module does not typically include a reverse-polarity protection diode.
Note: This module is a step-down regulator only. The input voltage must always be higher than the 5V output. Product images are for illustration purposes only.
