Product Description

The 1602 LCD Module is a robust and reliable display solution. It uses the industry-standard HD44780 controller, which means it is compatible with almost every microcontroller library available today. The module includes a built-in LED backlight and a command set that allows you to clear the screen, move the cursor, and even create custom characters (like battery icons or degree symbols). It features a standard 16-pin header for easy connection via jumper wires or for soldering directly to a PCB.

Prototyping and Engineering Tips from Robogears

  • The Potentiometer is Essential: If you power the LCD and see only "solid blocks" or a blank screen, don't panic. You must connect a 10kΩ potentiometer to the V0 (Pin 3). Rotating this dial adjusts the contrast; without it, the text is often invisible.

  • 5V vs 3.3V: While the logic can sometimes work at 3.3V, the display is designed for 5V. If powered by 3.3V (like from an ESP32 or Pi), the text will likely be very faint or not appear at all. Use a level shifter or a dedicated 5V rail.

  • RW Pin to Ground: In 99% of hobbyist projects, you only need to write to the LCD, not read from it. Connect the RW (Pin 5) directly to Ground to save a GPIO pin on your Arduino.

  • I2C Upgrade: If you find that 6 wires are too many for your project, solder an I2C Adapter Module to the back of this LCD. It reduces the wiring to just 2 data pins (SDA/SCL).

Disclaimer
